Who Needs an Oregon Heavy Motor Vehicle Trip Permit?
A carrier may need this permit when:
- The vehicle's gross weight is over 26,000 pounds and/or the vehicle has 3 or more axles.
- The vehicle has expired registration or no plates.
- Oregon is not listed on the vehicle's IRP registration cab card.
- The carrier needs temporary authority to operate while appropriate registration is obtained.
How Long Is It Valid?
The Heavy Motor Vehicle Trip Permit is valid for 10 consecutive days. It must be obtained before the truck begins operating in Oregon and must be carried in the vehicle while valid.
Important: Trip Permit vs Weight-Mile Tax
The Heavy Motor Vehicle Trip Permit is not the same thing as Oregon's Weight-Mile Temporary Tax Pass. A vehicle subject to Oregon weight-mile tax may also need the appropriate tax credential. For vehicles over 26,000 pounds, ODOT's temporary weight-mile pass requires payment based on the miles operated in Oregon.
Likewise, if the vehicle or load exceeds Oregon's legal size or weight limits, a separate oversize/overweight variance permit may be required before operation.
