Do I need to report IFTA miles for Oregon, if I report Oregon Weight Mile Tax?

The key difference IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is a fuel tax reporting system used by most U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Oregon Weight Mile Tax (WMT) is not a fuel tax — it’s a distance/weight-based tax charged instead of a fuel tax.

What Oregon does differently

  • Oregon does not participate in IFTA for fuel taxes the way other states do.
  • Instead, it charges the Weight Mile Tax for miles driven in Oregon.

So do you still need to file IFTA?

YES, if:

  • You operate in more than one IFTA jurisdiction (state/province)
  • You are a qualified motor carrier (typically over 26,000 lbs or meets IFTA criteria)

 In this case:

  • You file IFTA for all other states
  • You report Oregon miles on your IFTA return, but:
    • Oregon fuel is not taxed under IFTA
    • Oregon miles are handled separately through WMT

When you might NOT need IFTA

You may not need to file IFTA if:

  • You only operate within Oregon (intrastate only)
  • You don’t meet IFTA vehicle requirements

 Important nuance

Even though Oregon isn’t part of IFTA fuel tax:

  • You still include total miles (including Oregon) on your IFTA report
  • But you don’t pay IFTA fuel tax for Oregon miles

Simple way to think about it

  • IFTA = fuel taxes (multi-state)
  • Oregon WMT = replaces fuel tax inside Oregon only
  • If you leave Oregon → IFTA still applies

 Example

If you drive:

  • Oregon → Washington → California

You would:

  • Pay WMT for Oregon miles
  • File IFTA for WA and CA fuel taxes
  • Still include all miles in your IFTA report
