Oregon Hunters Permit
Key Requirements
-
You must purchase a valid hunting license (resident or non-resident) through ODFW.
-
For big game hunts, you will also need a tag/permit for the specific species, hunt area/season.
-
Residency rules apply: to qualify as an Oregon resident, you must have physically lived in Oregon for at least six consecutive months immediately prior to applying.
-
If you are under age 18 (or in some cases 17), you may be required to complete a hunter safety/education course.
Important Deadlines & Details
-
Licenses are generally valid for the calendar year (Jan 1 to Dec 31). You can begin buying next-year’s license starting Dec 1 of the prior year.
-
For controlled hunts: there are specific application deadlines (e.g., May 15 for many big game hunts) and draw result dates.
-
If you miss the tag purchase deadline for a big game hunt, there is an exception option (with a fee and affidavit) to buy after the deadline.
Special Notes & Tips
-
Even if you buy your license online, you may opt for electronic or paper documents (tags/permits). Be sure you know how you’ll carry or display them in the field.
-
If you apply for a controlled hunt and don’t draw your first choice, you may earn preference points which can improve your chances in future years.
-
Always make sure you check the specific regulations for the species/unit you’re hunting—rules on harvest reporting, tagging, what counts as legal harvest, etc.
